You can make many PDF corrections without installing Adobe Acrobat. The right browser workflow depends on what you mean by "edit": changing existing words, adding new content, signing the page, or rewriting a scanned document are four different jobs.
Starting with that distinction prevents the most common frustration: opening a scan in a text editor and wondering why none of its words can be clicked.
Choose the job before the tool
Use the table below to identify the simplest route.
| What you need to do | Best workflow |
|---|---|
| Correct an existing name, date, price or sentence | Edit the real PDF text |
| Add a note without changing existing words | Add text or an annotation |
| Sign the document | Use a signature tool |
| Rewrite a long section | Convert to Word or edit the source file |
| Change words inside a scan | Run OCR first |
| Remove or rearrange pages | Use a page-management tool |
PDFolia provides these as separate tools because combining every operation into one crowded panel makes simple corrections harder.
Edit existing PDF text in a browser
For a generated PDF with selectable text:
- Open the free PDF text editor.
- Drop the PDF onto the page.
- Click the line containing the mistake.
- Retype the text and review the live preview.
- Check the Changes panel, then download the edited PDF.
The replacement is written back as searchable text. The editor reuses embedded font glyphs when available and preserves the original size, weight, slant and colour. If the document's font subset lacks a new character, a compatible fallback may be required.
For the font details, read how to edit PDF text without changing the font.
Add text without replacing anything
Sometimes the page is correct and merely needs a note, account number or short instruction. In that case, select Add text, click the destination and type the new content. Choose its size and colour, then drag it if the placement needs adjustment.
Added text is different from editing existing text. It does not remove the words beneath it. Use a cover block only when you intentionally need to conceal visible page content, and remember that visual covering is not the same as secure redaction of sensitive data.
Highlight, draw and annotate
For review work, the editor can place highlights, boxes, circles, arrows and freehand marks. These are useful for feedback because they leave the original page text intact.
Each annotation appears in the Changes panel. You can return to it, move it or remove it before downloading instead of searching the page for a misplaced mark.
Sign without installing an application
If the document only needs a signature, open Sign PDF, choose the location and add the signature. Signing a page visually is not the same as applying a certificate-based digital signature, so confirm which type the recipient requires for legal or regulated workflows.
For an ordinary approval form, offer letter or internal document, a visible signature may be sufficient. Keep the untouched original until the recipient accepts the completed copy.
What to do with a scanned PDF
A scanned PDF contains photographs of pages. The letters look readable to a person but there are no text objects for an editor to replace.
You can still:
- Add text and annotations over the scan
- Highlight areas visually
- Add a signature
- Remove, extract or rotate pages
To change the printed words themselves, use optical character recognition (OCR) first. OCR creates a text layer, but its output should be proofread, especially for names, amounts and small type.
See why text cannot always be edited in a PDF for other causes.
When converting to Word is better
A PDF editor is best for targeted corrections. If you need to rewrite several paragraphs, change the page design, replace large tables or alter headers across many pages, use PDF to Word or return to the original source document.
Conversion gives you a document designed to reflow as text changes. It may not preserve a complex layout perfectly, but it is usually more practical than forcing a fixed PDF page to accommodate a substantial rewrite.
Check the result before sending it
After downloading:
- Open the file in a second PDF viewer.
- Zoom in on every changed line.
- Search for newly typed words.
- Check page count and orientation.
- Keep the original beside the edited copy.
This catches font substitutions, clipped text and accidental marks before the document reaches somebody else.
FAQ
Do I need an account to edit a PDF?
No. PDFolia does not require an account, email address or payment card, and it does not add a watermark to the downloaded file.
Can I edit a PDF on a phone?
Yes, the editor runs in a modern mobile browser. Precise text selection and annotation placement are usually easier on a larger screen.
Will the original PDF be changed?
No. The editor creates a new download. Keep the original file as your clean reference copy.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
You can provide the password when opening a supported protected file. The editor cannot bypass a password you do not know.
Is an online signature a digital certificate signature?
Not necessarily. A visible signature placed on a page is different from a cryptographic digital signature. Use the method required by the recipient or applicable policy.
